KIWIRAIL OO7 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT, TAUMARUNUI
Client:
 KiwiRail
Completion Date: April 2015
Team:

In this KiwiRail project URS was engaged by Downer in a design and construction contract for the replacement of eight rail bridges in the upper North Island.  The design team was responsible for determining the most cost effective solution for bridge replacement at each site, whilst considering issues such as constructibility and environmental effects.

Of the eight sites, the solutions included a variety of options including: complete bridge replacement with new approach embankments; replacement of superstructure utilising existing substructure with ground improvements and scour protection for the existing piers; construction of a reinforced embankment with a stream culvert and ground improvements; and bridge replacement with a shorter deck with new reinforced approaches.

The eight sites were mostly in rural isolated areas in steep terrain, and construction activities are limited to off-line work or during short (ie. 24 or 48 hour) line closures.
